Buttered Bake: 2 Ingredient “Cannabutter”

Many of our customers gravitate toward Purple Owl’s edible products for health reasons, convenience or they just enjoy the total body experience that edibles are known for. Whatever the reason, we took this opportunity to share a super easy cannabis butter recipe, also known as “cannabutter,” that edible lovers can put to use in the kitchen to sauté their favorite spring vegetables or add some extra elevation to their favorite brownie recipe.

Ingredients
– 1 cup of butter
– 1 cup (7-10 grams) of ground, dried cannabis (We recommend Animal House’s fresh, hand-trimmed flower cultivated in the Hudson Valley.)

Equipment
– Grinder (for cannabis)
– Saucepan or slow cooker
– Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer
– Storage container

Instructions
1. Decarboxylation
– Before infusing butter with cannabis, you need to decarboxylate the dried cannabis. This process activates the THC, making it psychoactive.
– Preheat your oven to 245°F (118°C).
– Spread the ground cannabis on a baking sheet in a thin layer.
– Bake it in the oven for 30-40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes to ensure even decarboxylation.

2. Melting the Butter
– In a saucepan or slow cooker, add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of butter. The water helps regulate temperature and prevents the butter from scorching.
– Allow the butter to melt completely over low heat.

3. Adding the Cannabis
– Once the butter has melted, add the decarboxylated cannabis to the saucepan.
– Keep the temperature low (ideally between 160°F to 180°F or 71°C to 82°C) and let the mixture simmer for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Do not let it boil to prevent THC degradation.

4. Straining the Mixture
– Line a strainer with cheesecloth and place it over your storage container.
– Carefully pour the hot mixture through the cheesecloth. Let the liquid strain freely. Avoid squeezing the cheesecloth to prevent extraneous plant material from entering the butter.

5. Cooling and Storing
– Allow the cannabutter to cool at room temperature.
– Once cooled, cover the container and place it in the refrigerator. The butter will solidify and separate from any water, which can be discarded
– Keep the cannabutter refrigerated and use as needed for cooking or baking.

Tips
– Dosage: Be cautious with the dosage, especially if you are new to cannabis edibles. The potency of cannabutter depends on the strength of your cannabis and how much you use.
– Strain Choice: The type of cannabis can affect the result. Sativa strains tend to be more energizing, while Indica strains are more relaxing.

Always remember to label your cannabutter clearly and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Enjoy the bake!
