Beth Smith
Beth Smith, (AKA Mrs. Smith) Co-Owner and CEO of the Purple Owl Dispensary
Special needs educator, entrepreneur, and Westchester mom, Beth Smith (aka Mrs. Smith), doesn’t generally fit the archetype of a cannabis entrepreneur. But in 2023, she became one of only a handful of minority and women-owned licensed dispensaries in New York State. Her company, The Purple Owl Dispensary, delivers premium cannabis products to your front door throughout Westchester, Putnam and other parts of the lower Hudson Valley. In addition to her delivery business, Beth is scheduled to open her retail dispensary in White Plains this spring.
Beth is a long-time Ossining resident and has taught in the surrounding communities for the past 23 years. She specializes in teaching children with special needs in Mount Vernon and has also taught in Katonah and Chappaqua. Beth also co-owned a Kettle Corn business that she operated at the South Street Seaport and Newark Airport with her business partner and current co-owner of the Purple Owl, Juan Alverio.
Both Beth and Juan recognized the unique business opportunity that legalized recreational cannabis offered and worked diligently for the past two years to secure their license. They offer only premium-grade cannabis products sourced from the highest quality state-approved growers. True to her teaching roots, Beth’s vision for the Purple Owl is to use it as a platform to educate, demystify and destigmatize cannabis for new and returning health-conscious clientele.
Juan Alverio
Juan Alverio, Co-Owner and Director of Inventory
Juan Alverio is co-owner and Director of Inventory at the Purple Owl Dispensary. A life-long Ossining resident with Puerto Rican roots, he graduated from Ossining High School in 2005, and worked as a restaurant manager in his community for the past 12 years. In addition to his management career, Juan is a serial entrepreneur who co-owned and operated a kettle corn business with Mrs. Smith.
To understand Juan’s story is to understand why the CAURD (Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensaries) program exists. Juan had several infractions for minor cannabis offenses that occurred during his youth. One of these infractions wrongfully accused Juan of carrying a concealed “deadly weapon” when arresting officers found a nail clipper in his pocket. He never dreamed that these painful life lessons would one day allow him an opportunity to partner with a local schoolteacher to legally sell cannabis in the very state in which he was wrongly convicted of aggravated crimes.
Now, Juan has a new outlook on life and the chance to pursue his dreams. Not only is he intelligent and bilingual, Juan also has a deep understanding and knowledge of cannabis and its beneficial effects. He is looking forward to working with his partners and new business to help educate people concerning the new legal cannabis market, as well as marketing his line of jewelry made from the cannabis and hemp plant.
